The only number that matters: dollars per watt

Installers price whole systems, and whole systems are hard to compare. One quote is $21,500 for twenty panels, another is $26,800 for twenty-four panels with a different inverter. Which is the better deal? You cannot tell from the totals.

So the trade uses a common denominator: take the total installed price, divide by the system size in watts. A $24,000 quote for an 8 kW system is $3.00 per watt. For simple residential roofs in Canada, our planning range is $2.75 to $3.25 per watt installed, before any incentives. Complex roofs, small systems and remote locations land higher, and that can be legitimate.

Do that one division on every quote you receive and you will instantly see which offers deserve a closer look and which need to explain themselves.

Where the money actually goes

Panels are the badge on the hood, not the engine. On a typical install the hardware splits roughly three ways: the panels themselves, the inverter equipment that converts DC to household AC, and the racking, wiring and balance-of-system parts. The rest, often the largest single share, is labour, permits, engineering and the electrician who makes the final connection.

That is why a suspiciously cheap quote is worth interrogating. Panels are a commodity; the price difference usually hides in the inverter brand, the racking, or the hours a crew will actually spend on your roof.

What moves the price up or down

Six things do most of the moving: roof complexity and pitch, how many separate roof faces the array spans, your electrical panel (an older 100-amp panel sometimes needs an upgrade), travel distance for the crew, panel and inverter tier, and season. None of these are visible in a phone estimate, which is why serious installers insist on a site evaluation before they commit to a number.

How to use these numbers

Treat the planning range as your anchor, not your answer. Get multiple quotes for the same roof, convert each to dollars per watt, then make every installer explain what sits above or below the range. The explanation tells you more than the price does.

Common questions

Is a bigger system always the better deal?

Per watt, usually yes: fixed costs spread over more panels. But a system sized past what you can use or export profitably wastes the extra capacity. Size to your usage first, then look at price.

Do incentives change these numbers?
