Cold helps. Darkness hurts.
Solar panels are semiconductors, and semiconductors run more efficiently cold than hot. A crisp, sunny February day at minus 15 produces excellent power per hour of sun; the same panel loses a few percent of output on a 30 degree July afternoon. Cold is not solar's problem in Canada.
Short days are. December in most of the country offers a third or less of June's daylight, and the sun sits low. A Canadian system produces the large majority of its annual energy between March and October, and any honest production estimate is built that way from the start: it is an annual number with a summer bulge, not twelve equal slices.
What snow actually costs
Less than most people assume. Panels are dark, smooth glass mounted at an angle; light snow often slides or melts off within days, and production estimates already carry a snow allowance. Losing some output in the weakest weeks of the year costs only a small share of annual production.
Two winter effects even work in your favour. Snow on the ground reflects light up at the array, a bonus called albedo. And a cold, clear day after a system sheds snow is some of the cleanest producing weather a panel sees all year.
Resist the urge to clear panels yourself. Roof plus ice is a worse combination than a few lost kilowatt-hours, and scrapers can damage the glass. If heavy snow load is a factor where you live, that belongs in the design conversation, not in your January chore list.
How installers design for winter
Three things separate a winter-literate design: tilt and orientation chosen for year-round yield rather than a summer brochure number, racking and wiring rated for snow and ice loading under local code, and a production estimate that shows monthly output rather than a single annual promise. Ask to see the monthly curve for your actual roof. An installer who can produce it has modelled your house; one who cannot is quoting a brochure.
The homeowner's winter math
Net metering does the seasonal smoothing for you: summer surplus becomes credits, and in most provinces those credits carry into the dark months, which is why the 12-month expiry rules in our net metering guide matter. You are not trying to power January from January sun. You are running an annual energy budget with the grid as the buffer.
Common questions
Do panels produce anything on an overcast winter day?
Some, at a fraction of a clear day. Diffuse light still generates. The annual estimate already averages this in, which is why one grey week tells you nothing about the investment.
Will frost or freeze-thaw damage panels?
Panels are built and certified for exactly this, sealed glass and frames tested well beyond residential conditions. The weak points in a bad install are workmanship items like flashing and penetrations, which is a contractor question, and our hiring guide covers how to check.
Should I tilt panels steeper for winter?
Steeper tilt sheds snow better and catches the low sun, but usually costs summer yield on a fixed roof mount. On most homes the roof's own pitch decides, and the design conversation is about orientation and string layout instead.
